FAQ

  • What is Pilates? Originally called Contrology, is a method developed by Joseph Pilates that emerged in the 1920s. Created with the intention to strengthen the body & mind through a holistic approach to exercise. Quintessential Pilates exercises can be executed on the mat as well as on specialized Pilates equipment like the Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, Arc, etc. Benefits of Pilates are: developing core strength & stability, joint mobility, muscular and fascial flexibility, connection to breath, improved physical balance, coordination, control & confidence.

  • What is GYROTONIC? Is a method developed by Juliu Horvath. “The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® is a unique, holistic approach to movement. Some of the benefits of a regular Gyrotonic practice include a healthier, more supple spine, increased range of motion, greater joint stability, improved agility and athletic performance and a deep internal strength. Experienced Gyrotonic trainers offer personalized sessions that are adapted to fit the needs of all ages and abilities from elderly patients recovering from injury, to highly skilled professional athletes.” (https://www.gyrotonic.com). Movement wise, the GYROTONIC METHOD® feels like you are moving under water with seamless circular, spiraling and undulatory movements and sequences.

  • What is Functional Movement/Training? This class consists of mainly standing exercises and is rooted in alignment, form, technique and proper body mechanics for daily actions. Over the years, Wainani observed the missing gaps and needs in ALL client’s physicality and brought together these fundamental concepts and exercises. One of the biggest needs was to provide the countless number of clients who could not get on/off the floor (mainly due to knee, hip and back concerns) with well-balanced seated & standing exercises. But there was also a need to provide exercise enthusiasts, avid yogis & professional movers an avenue to fix imbalances and retrain dysfunctional movement patterns. In general this mat class is about pushing the body enough in the right direction to create change without creating wear and tear in the process.

  • What is Yoga Tune Up®️? Is a method developed by Jill Miller, C-IAYT, ERYT. Is a way to relieve muscle and fascial tension with the Tune Up®️ Fitness Self Massage Therapy Balls. “It helps eradicate pain, improve posture and enhance performance through a unique blend of yoga, Corrective Exercise, Self-Massage, and Breath Strategies.” (https://tuneupfitness.com)

It brings together her love for and the benefits of aerial arts and Pilates - breath, overall strength, core strength, flexibility, mobility, weightlessness, traction, 3-dimensional awareness - inversions, spinning - fun and laughter.

  • Which class is better for flexibility/mobility? ALL class types provide all benefits including flexibility. But if you have to hone in on one or two methods it would be - the GYROTONIC METHOD® and Yoga Tune Up®️(currently Yoga Tune Up®️ classes are not on the class schedule, but private sessions can be arranged).

  • Which is better for strength? Again, ALL class types provide all benefits including overall strength & core strength. But if you have to hone in on one or two methods it would be - Pilates Mat or Pilates Reformer and Functional Movement.

  • I’m new to these types of training, where do I begin? If no injuries and no pain, then you can start with Pilates Essentials (Mat) 1, Functional, or Reformer 1 classes. If you are recovering from an injury, surgery or are in pain, it’s best to start with a Private Session. This first session can help determine which modality can help you best and which programming is best for you. To get started, please fill out the”New Client” form: https://www.wainaniwellness.com/contact

  • Is it better to start with private sessions or a class? This depends on a couple of factors - health, schedule, finances. If possible, it’s best to start off with at least one private session if your schedule and finances allow. If you are injured or healing from an injury we highly recommend several private sessions to begin. The number of private sessions or your ability to join a class will be determined by you and the instructor after the first session and assessment.

  • Why is there a price range for Appointments (private, duet, trio sessions)? This depends on an instructor's training and certifications along with years of experience. All instructors are qualified and hand selected to be part of the Wainani Wellness Team. *we also offer the option to work with apprentice instructors at the apprentice rate. Just inquire.
